Brief pause

Yesterday was 9/11 & I had plenty of time to reflect on the impact that day made on who knows how many thousands of lives, mine included. At the same time, it was an extremely important event in the history of music as two of rap's biggest stars, 50 Cent & Kanye West released their Curtis & Graduation CDs respectively.

Knowing that these two duders released their newest CDs on the same day not only had me all excited, as I had every right to be. At the same time, yesterday left me all anxious as well, as I'm considering what CD I'm planning to buy next, what kick I'm on genre-wise, which groups/singers I should be listening to more often, etc. and with plenty of good reason too.

You see, I'm really open to pretty much every genre of music out there. And at a time when it seems that what is passed off as music really isn't music at all - that is to say, something of lasting quality & value, something which is not viewed as disposable product or pure musical dreck because it didn't sell up to expectations - the newest releases from 50 & Kanye could be seen as a breath of fresh air in an otherwise stagnant time for popular music in general. Not only that, but 50 & Kanye could serve short notice that hip-hop & rap are once again rising to the top of the charts & there's no stopping either of them from accomplishing that feat.

And yet, there's only one winner in this duel for rap's top prize: will it be 50 or Kanye? It's anyone's guess but one rapper will come out a victor, a conqueror & the other's got to show his love & respect where it's due.
